Driving around Spain
Is it worth renting a car in Spain?
A rental car is useful for smaller towns, inland landscapes and accommodation away from rail routes. Madrid and Barcelona can be explored without a car, so it often makes sense to collect only when the road-trip part of the holiday begins.
Spain rewards a regional plan. Central Spain, Catalonia and Mallorca offer very different journeys; an island rental is not interchangeable with a mainland booking. Choose the airport and return point before comparing vehicles.
Palma is on Mallorca. Treat ferry travel and moving a car between islands or between the islands and mainland as separate questions requiring written supplier permission.

Madrid · MAD
Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport
Madrid works for a loop through central Spain, with stops such as Segovia, Ávila and the surrounding countryside. Delay collection if you are spending the first part of the trip in central Madrid.

Barcelona · BCN
Barcelona–El Prat Airport
Barcelona is a starting point for Catalonia and the Costa Brava. Check the city’s low-emission rules if your accommodation requires driving into Barcelona, and consider collecting after a city stay.

Palma de Mallorca · PMI
Palma de Mallorca Airport
Palma is the relevant gateway for a Mallorca road trip, not mainland Spain. Choose a car that fits village parking and mountain roads, and do not assume the rental can leave the island.

What to check before booking
Compare the vehicle, total price and conditions together. The cheapest initial price is not always the best fit for your route.
Total rental price
Compare the whole booking, including any airport, one-way, additional-driver and out-of-hours charges. Keep the same dates, vehicle category and cancellation terms when comparing offers.
Payment card and deposit
Check which cards the supplier accepts, whose name must be on the card, the deposit amount and the available credit required at collection.
Insurance and excess
Compare liability for damage and theft, exclusions and the excess. Check whether extra cover reduces the supplier’s excess or reimburses you after a claim.
Fuel and mileage
Confirm the required fuel level at return and the mileage allowance for your route. Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer at collection and return.
Collection and return
Use the supplier’s exact collection address and return instructions. A search labelled airport can include a desk, shuttle or meeting arrangement.
Driver eligibility
Check minimum and maximum age, how long the licence must have been held, accepted licence documents and any young-driver charge. These are supplier conditions, not one universal national policy.
Local roads and charges
Some Spanish roads charge tolls, while others do not. Check the route rather than assuming every motorway is either free or tolled. Ask the supplier about electronic payment arrangements and any separate administration charges.
Cross-border and ferry travel
Obtain the supplier’s written permission for every country, ferry journey and one-way return. Check the fees, insurance validity and breakdown assistance before booking the route.

Spanish cities operate low-emission zones, often called ZBE. Rules are local and can depend on vehicle emissions and registration. Confirm access for the actual rental car before driving to central accommodation or a parking garage.

Choosing your car
Choose a car that fits your route

Book accommodation parking where it matters and use signed public car parks for historic centres. On Mallorca, choose a small enough car for village roads and confirm parking before driving into a busy coastal resort.
Mountain areas can have snow and closures even when the coast is mild. In hot weather, plan water and rest stops and keep luggage out of sight when parking at beaches or viewpoints.
A compact car can be easier to park, but passengers, luggage and child seats must fit comfortably. If an automatic is essential, book that transmission explicitly. For an electric car, check charging at your overnight stops and the required return charge.

Car rental in Spain: frequently asked questions
Is renting a car in Spain worth it?
A rental car is useful for smaller towns, inland landscapes and accommodation away from rail routes. Madrid and Barcelona can be explored without a car, so it often makes sense to collect only when the road-trip part of the holiday begins.
Which airport should I choose?
Madrid (MAD) suits Central Spain and Castilla y León. Barcelona (BCN) suits Catalonia, Girona and the Costa Brava. Palma de Mallorca (PMI) suits Mallorca and the Serra de Tramuntana.
Which side of the road does Spain drive on?
Spain drives on the right. Take time to adjust if you usually drive on the left.
Do I need an international driving permit?
That depends on where your licence was issued and the destination’s recognition rules. Carry the original licence and confirm any permit or translation requirement with the authority and rental supplier.
Can I take the car across a border?
Only if the supplier permits your countries and route in writing. Check insurance, assistance, fees and return-location conditions before making a cross-border plan.
Should I hire a large car?
Choose the smallest category that comfortably fits the passengers, luggage and child seats. Check transmission and boot space; a larger car can be harder to park in older towns.
