Why hire a car in Oman?
Hiring a car makes it easier to combine Muscat with coastal stops, wadis, mountain scenery and inland towns without arranging each journey separately.

Compare rental options and plan the practical side of driving in Oman, from airport collection and rental conditions to choosing a vehicle for coastal roads, wadis, mountains and inland routes.
Driving around Oman
Hiring a car gives you the flexibility to combine time in Muscat with the coast, wadis, mountain scenery and inland towns without organising each journey separately.
Places such as Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab fit naturally into a journey along the coast, while Nizwa takes you inland from Muscat and Sur can form part of a longer coastal route.
The right vehicle depends on the route you are actually planning. Many common journeys use paved roads, while specific mountain or remote routes may have different vehicle requirements.
Airport car rental
Airport pages combine rental search with practical information about collection, driving conditions, vehicle choice and onward routes.

Rental offers in Oman can look similar until you compare the conditions behind the price. Deposit, excess, mileage, vehicle requirements and collection arrangements can all affect which option suits your route.
Don't compare rentals on headline price alone.
Compare the complete rental price, including additional-driver, one-way and collection charges. Check cancellation and amendment terms before paying.
Confirm accepted cards, whether the card must be in the main driver’s name, the deposit amount, how it is held and when it is released.
Check your potential liability for damage or theft and what the cover excludes, including tyres, glass and the underbody.
Check the fuel level required at collection and return, and any refuelling charges.
Confirm the vehicle category and any “or similar” wording, transmission, pickup and return locations, and whether collection is by desk, shuttle or meet-and-greet.
Check licence and age requirements, whether extra drivers must be named and any additional fees.
Check whether mileage is unlimited or capped, especially for longer routes from Muscat.
Confirm vehicle requirements and access rules for mountain or remote routes. A 4×4 does not automatically mean the supplier permits off-road driving.
Oman by car
One of the advantages of travelling around Oman by car is that the landscape between destinations is often part of the experience. Roads leave Muscat for rocky mountains, wadis and long stretches of coast.
Having your own car also makes it easier to stop when something catches your attention rather than limiting the trip to a fixed sequence of organised excursions.
A route can combine places such as Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab, Sur and Nizwa, with the vehicle choice becoming more important if mountain routes are added.

Choosing your car

Not automatically. The vehicle you need depends much more on where you intend to drive than on the fact that you are visiting Oman.
Many common journeys from Muscat follow paved roads, including routes towards Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab, Sur and Nizwa. For these routes, compare suitable standard cars as well as larger vehicles.
Other routes are different. Jabal Akhdar is an important example where a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required for the mountain road, so including it can affect which rental makes sense for the whole trip.
A 4×4 also does not automatically mean that a rental company allows off-road driving. Always check the individual rental conditions as well as the access requirements for the places you intend to visit.

Hiring a car makes it easier to combine Muscat with coastal stops, wadis, mountain scenery and inland towns without arranging each journey separately.
Not for every itinerary. Many common routes use paved roads, while particular mountain, desert or off-road journeys may require a 4×4.
A 4×4 is not normally needed simply to reach the usual visitor areas for Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole from the main coastal road.
Jabal Akhdar is an important example of a mountain route where four-wheel drive is required, so including it can affect the vehicle you choose for the wider trip.
Muscat International Airport can be a practical starting point if you intend to leave the capital and begin a wider road trip soon after arriving.
Not necessarily. Compare the final price alongside the deposit, excess, mileage, vehicle type, fuel policy and collection arrangements.
