Lithuania · Kaunas Airport
Compare car rental at Kaunas Airport (KUN), with collection advice and route planning for Kaunas and central Lithuania.
Kaunas · KUN
Kaunas works for central Lithuania and a regional loop. Compare a local return with any one-way fee to Vilnius or the coast.
The airport identifies P1 for rental vehicle pickup and return. Confirm the supplier’s handover point and follow the rental return instructions for P1 rather than assuming the passenger drop-off is the return location.
A rental can connect countryside accommodation, lake districts and the Baltic coast. Vilnius and Kaunas city breaks can be separated from driving days. Choose the airport around the region you actually plan to visit.
Compare airport collection with a later collection if you start with a city stay. Include the transport to a different rental branch and any extra parking nights when comparing the total cost.
Beyond the airport
Choose a manageable regional journey from Kaunas, with overnight stops arranged before you set daily driving plans.
Your first region
Vilnius suits the southeast and a wider inland circuit, Kaunas central Lithuania, and Palanga the Baltic coast. Compare a coastal base with daily long drives from an inland city. Price a different-airport return explicitly.
A more relaxed itinerary
If your first stop is a city, compare keeping that stay separate from the rental. Include the transport to a later collection branch and the overnight parking saved, rather than judging the choice only by the daily rate.
Arrival day
Leave time for collection, vehicle checks and getting used to the car. Avoid committing to a long or difficult first drive after an overnight flight.
Route planning
Set up the first destination and review access before starting the car.
Final approach
Book legal parking for old-town accommodation in Vilnius or Kaunas. For a Curonian Spit visit, separately check ferry, access rules, parking and supplier permission; do not assume an island or protected-area transfer is included.
Road conditions
Confirm tyres and mandatory seasonal equipment with the branch for your dates and route. Winter darkness and rural ice need extra time. An included equipment package should identify what is actually supplied and any conditions for use.
Look beyond the headline
Compare offers for the same dates, vehicle and collection location. Check these details before choosing an airport rental.
Don't compare rentals on headline price alone.
Compare the whole booking, including any airport, one-way, additional-driver and out-of-hours charges. Keep the same dates, vehicle category and cancellation terms when comparing offers.
Check which cards the supplier accepts, whose name must be on the card, the deposit amount and the available credit required at collection.
Compare liability for damage and theft, exclusions and the excess. Check whether extra cover reduces the supplier’s excess or reimburses you after a claim.
Confirm the required fuel level at return and the mileage allowance for your route. Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer at collection and return.
Use the supplier’s exact collection address and return instructions. A search labelled airport can include a desk, shuttle or meeting arrangement.
Check minimum and maximum age, how long the licence must have been held, accepted licence documents and any young-driver charge. These are supplier conditions, not one universal national policy.
Lithuania road trip
Vilnius VNO, Kaunas KUN and Palanga PLQ use different rental collection areas. Match the code on the flight and voucher, and use that airport’s instructions rather than a nationwide company address.
Check licence recognition, original documents and supplier eligibility before travel. Carry the rental paperwork and obtain permission for Latvia or other planned countries. A border-free itinerary is not automatically a permitted rental itinerary.
For a relaxed journey, choose fewer overnight bases and leave room for weather and unplanned stops. Store the accommodation’s permitted vehicle approach and parking instructions alongside the address; the shortest navigation route may not be the right way to arrive.
Collection at Kaunas
The collection process belongs to the specific supplier and booking. Confirm it before travelling.
The airport identifies P1 for rental vehicle pickup and return. Confirm the supplier’s handover point and follow the rental return instructions for P1 rather than assuming the passenger drop-off is the return location. Use the meeting instructions on the voucher for your specific booking.
Enter the flight number and allow time for border formalities and baggage. Read the late-arrival and no-show policy.
Carry your original, valid driving licence, the identification required by the supplier, the booking confirmation and an accepted payment card. An international driving permit or translation may also be required depending on the issuing country and destination. A permit supplements the national licence; it does not replace it.
Inspect the car before moving it. Record existing marks on the handover report and take clear photographs of all sides, wheels, windscreen, fuel level and the interior. Check the breakdown number and what to do after an accident. At return, keep your fuel receipt and ask for a condition report where available. For a key drop, photograph the parked vehicle and retain evidence of the return time.
Choosing your car
For Kaunas and central Lithuania, start with the passengers, luggage and child seats you need to carry. Compare boot capacity and transmission before moving up to a larger vehicle category.
A small car can be easier to manoeuvre at village accommodation and public car parks. A larger vehicle can suit extra luggage, but check its dimensions against any parking height limit or narrow final approach.
Reserve an automatic explicitly if required. For an electric car, check charging at overnight stops, the payment arrangements for public chargers and the required battery level when you return it.
Before you sign
Read the agreement for your actual vehicle, route and dates. Keep written permissions and payment arrangements with the booking confirmation.
Check damage and theft cover, the excess, exclusions and the claims process for any separate reimbursement policy.
Road-charge obligations can depend on vehicle classification. Ask whether a larger van is treated differently from a passenger car, and include parking and any destination access charges. Confirm what is already included before paying separately.
Lithuania drives on the right. Wear a seat belt and use an appropriate child restraint. Reserve the correct seat for the child’s age, size and the destination’s rules; do not assume an available seat will fit. Put navigation in place before setting off and stop safely if you need to change it. Avoid alcohol when driving, and follow the signed limits rather than treating a general summary as a substitute for road signs.

No. Collection can be at a desk, another airport location, by shuttle or through a meeting arrangement. Follow your supplier’s instructions for the specific booking.
Provide flight details and contact the supplier if arrival changes. Check late-arrival, opening-hour and no-show conditions; a flight number is not a guarantee of indefinite collection.
Compare an explicitly priced one-way booking. Availability, permitted return branches and one-way fees depend on the supplier and dates.
That depends on where your licence was issued and the destination’s recognition rules. Carry the original licence and confirm any permit or translation requirement with the authority and rental supplier.
