Driving around Georgia

Why hire a car in Georgia?

Hiring a car gives you the flexibility to travel beyond Tbilisi and build a wider route through Georgia at your own pace. It makes it easier to combine places such as Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Kutaisi, Borjomi, Vardzia and Svaneti.

Having your own transport also gives you more freedom to stop at viewpoints, monasteries, villages and smaller towns along the way, rather than organising each journey around fixed transfers or tours.

The main decision is which vehicle suits your route. Many major roads are paved, while rougher mountain or remote routes may make extra ground clearance or a different vehicle type more useful.

Look beyond the headline

What to check before booking

Rental offers in Georgia can look similar until you compare the conditions behind the price. Card requirements, road restrictions, mileage and insurance can matter just as much as the daily rate.

Don't compare rentals on headline price alone.

01

Total price and extra charges

Compare the complete rental price, including additional-driver, one-way and collection charges. Check cancellation and amendment terms before paying.

02

Payment card and deposit

Confirm accepted cards, whether the card must be in the main driver’s name, the deposit amount, how it is held and when it is released.

03

Insurance and excess

Check your potential liability for damage or theft and what the cover excludes, including tyres, glass and the underbody.

04

Fuel policy

Check the fuel level required at collection and return, and any refuelling charges.

05

Collection and vehicle details

Confirm the vehicle category and any “or similar” wording, transmission, pickup and return locations, and whether collection is by desk, shuttle or meet-and-greet.

06

Drivers and eligibility

Check licence and age requirements, whether extra drivers must be named and any additional fees.

07

Mileage

Check whether mileage is unlimited or capped, particularly if your itinerary covers several regions of Georgia.

08

Permitted roads

Check restrictions on unpaved roads, mountain routes and particular areas, regardless of the vehicle type.

09

Cross-border travel

If you plan to drive into Armenia or another neighbouring country, confirm permission, insurance and paperwork before booking.

Driving in Georgia

The road can be part of the trip

The family behind The World As We Found It travel blog drove through Georgia on a three-week family road trip, linking Tbilisi with Kazbegi, the Black Sea coast, Svaneti, Kutaisi, Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia.

Their trip also showed why journey times should not be judged from distance alone. Mountain roads, traffic, livestock, roadworks, stops and changing surfaces can all affect how long a drive takes.

Current conditions matter more than any single past journey, so check the route you intend to drive before setting off.

Choosing your car

Do you need a 4×4 in Georgia?

Rough mountain road on the route towards Mestia in Svaneti

Do not assume that every road trip in Georgia requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Many major roads between cities and established destinations can be suitable for a normal rental car.

More ground clearance becomes relevant when the itinerary includes rough or unpaved roads. In some cases, clearance is more important than choosing 4×4 simply because the destination is mountainous.

Stepantsminda and the Georgian Military Highway should not automatically be treated as an off-road journey. The key questions are where you plan to leave the main road and what the current conditions are.

Always check the rental company’s restrictions on unpaved roads and restricted areas before booking.

Car rental in Georgia FAQs

What are the advantages of hiring a car in Georgia?

A rental car can be particularly useful if your trip extends beyond Tbilisi and you want to combine several regions, viewpoints, monasteries, towns and villages without relying on organised transfers or tours.

Do I need a 4×4 to drive around Georgia?

Not automatically. Many major routes between cities and established destinations are paved. A vehicle with more ground clearance or four-wheel drive becomes more relevant when your itinerary includes rough, remote or unpaved roads.

Can I drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi in a normal rental car?

Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi, is reached via the Georgian Military Highway. The main route does not automatically require a 4×4, but road and weather conditions should be checked before travelling.

Can I drive a rental car to Mestia or Ushguli?

Svaneti requires more planning than a straightforward city-to-city drive. Check the current road situation, weather, vehicle suitability and the rental company’s restrictions before deciding whether to self-drive.

Can I use a debit card to hire a car in Georgia?

Most car-hire companies require a credit card in the main driver’s name, even where no separate security deposit is taken. A small number may accept debit cards, but conditions can be more restrictive.

Can I take a Georgian rental car into Armenia?

Cross-border travel depends on the rental company and vehicle. Written permission, extra insurance, additional paperwork or fees may be required, so check before booking.

Is driving in Georgia difficult?

Conditions vary considerably. Main roads can be straightforward, while mountain roads, livestock, roadworks, weather and uneven surfaces can make some journeys slower or more demanding than the distance suggests.

Should I choose the cheapest rental car in Georgia?

Not necessarily. Compare the final price alongside card requirements, deposit, excess, mileage, road restrictions, fuel policy, vehicle type and collection arrangements.
